Exciting times for Internet business

Glen Wallace wasn’t always as keen on computers. Thirteen years ago he had just won the best overall apprentice from trade attendees at the Wellington Polytechnic. In his final year as a sign-writing apprentice he was quoted in the Otago Daily Times, as saying “I would much rather be out on a big wall sign-writing, than stuck in the workshop doing a boring computer cut sign.”

Thirteen years later and this statement couldn’t be further from the truth for the now Managing Director of online business development company Accede.

Accede specialises in internet marketing covering a broad spectrum of services. These include Website Design, Development, Website Management, Online Advertising, Media Placement and Consultancy.

Accede has also recently developed an Online Shopping Management System called AccedePlus, catering to the rapidly growing eCommerce market.

It’s an exciting field to work in and with the recent sale of Trade Me for $700 million to Fairfax, people are now looking at business on the internet with a new revere.

“Its funny how things have turned out” comments Glen, reading the Otago Daily Times article now, “Eventually Computers did take over from traditional hand sign-writing skills and I felt it was time to retrain. At the time the internet was just starting to take off, so I relocated to Sydney to study Information Technology in Web Design.”

Upon graduating Glen secured a position with Fairfax Digital (now owner of Trade Me) and one of Australia’s largest online media companies with a network of over 40 websites representing Australian newspapers & business publications.

Starting as an Assistant Site Producer, Glen worked on F2 Shopping. It was an interesting period for the internet, the dot com bubble had just burst and the initial heady internet party days were over.
F2 Shopping fell under the umbrella of Sold.com.au, Australia’s then equivalent of Trademe.co.nz. Fairfax sold Sold.com.au for $19 Million to Yahoo, a very good price at the time.

Fairfax held on to F2 shopping and restructured senior management with Glen being promoted to Site Producer and Analyst.

“It was an exciting time for me, I was working my way up through the company and my General Manager at the time, and now Chief Operating Officer Mike Game, encouraged me to focus on the business development side of the internet.”

Eventually the call of home was too strong for Glen and his wife Teresa. “We always wanted to move back to New Zealand and start a family. We had lived for a year in Queenstown previously, and loved the lifestyle”.

Glen secured a job for the next three years managing and designing websites for leading local design firm, Niche Design.

Upon leaving Niche, Glen saw a gap in the market for online business consultancy and with this in mind Accede was born.

“Finding a good web designer is a bit like finding a good mechanic. I don’t have a clue about half of the stuff he bills me for. I trust that he is giving me the correct advice and completing the work at a fair price”.

Utilising his experience in Online Shopping, Accede has this week launched an eCommerce Management system called AccedePlus.

“I developed AccedePlus out of my own frustration from using existing shopping systems. From a designer’s point of view they were very inflexible when trying to integrate into a client’s website and I was forever being asked for more functionality from the client which just wasn’t there.”

AccedePlus really is a quantum leap in the shopping cart arena, giving customers and shop owners a rewarding online shopping experience. If you’re looking at selling a product online, then an online admin demonstration is a must before stepping into the rapidly growing online shopping arena.

Of course online shopping is just one sector of business on the internet.

Vint Cerf who chaired last week’s ICANN conference in Wellington, and chief internet evangelist for Google, was last week quoted as saying that “1% of the internet’s really cool applications had been invented.” With the advent of faster broadband, new innovations will emerge daily.

These kind of comments highlight that the internet is providing real opportunities for entrepreneurs to take advantage of emerging internet markets.

Accede is located on Level 3 in the O’Connells Centre and Glen can be contacted on 409 2276 or email glen@accede.co.nz to discuss your internet needs.
